Should Christians Concern Themselves with Politics?

Recently, I had a heated debate with a beloved family member about politics. In fact, I had many such discussions with friends about the subject. When I was in my 20’s I didn’t really participate in the voting process, shame on me. I really didn’t start to pay attention until about 15 years ago, on who was running and their platform. When I became a more biblically knowledgeable Christian, elections became critical and I understood the importance of our vote.

I was asked this question by a close friend of mine recently and I would like to discuss the subject with you. It shouldn’t matter your party affiliation, but whether you have clear conscience in your vote. As with everything I would reference the bible to make my point. We should refer to the scriptures for it has the answers for everything that pertains to this life including this subject. (2Tim3:16)

Those that are elected into office are to represent the citizens, not just those who voted for him and to vote in the best interest of the country. They are given the authority to carry out their duties to the best of their ability. The citizens are to submit to their authority. Christians are required to do so in accordance to 1 Peter 2:13-20 (NIV) 13Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men... The word submit, in this scripture means to subject one's self.

We are bound to obey the authority of our elected officials. What if our elected official goes against the scriptures? John the Baptizer was one we could learn from when this happens as found in Matthew 14:1-12. This is when Herod the tetrarch was unlawful in taking his brother’s wife and John spoke out against it. In this country we have the freedom of speech and if our leaders run contrary to the scriptures in their decisions we have the right to exercise that freedom. John had not committed any sin by opposing what Herod was doing. The same applies to us who oppose our leaders today.

Our elected officials are not to be worshipped, but prayed for in accordance to 1 Timothy 2. Many hold politicians higher than they hold even Christ our Savior! How absurd! They are human beings just as you and I are and they need our prayers, but not our worship. Nowhere in the bible are we to worship mankind.

The United States of America is considered by most a democracy, but we are also a republic. The citizens of this country are given the privilege of voting for the candidate of their choice to represent their voice. Citizens can also run for office as a form of national service to the country, keyword service. Elections have been decided by just one vote, giving truth to the saying, “Every Vote Counts”. This gives the Christian voting community the power to elect candidates who shares our views.

My question is, How has the Christians voted on the following;

  1. The death penalty?
  2. Legalizing abortion?
  3. Gay marriage?
  4. Prayer in school?
  5. In God We Trust off of our money?
  6. In God taken out of the pledge of allegiance?
  7. War?

How would you vote on the above?

Would you vote for a candidate that went against God’s laws?

What say you?

I know that on average most people see what is visible 3D,but everything we see is not visibly understood, somethings we can't see but we still believe it's there ,ergo lies our faith that we can believe what is positive shall overcome the negative attributes of our enviornment so most people tend to believe things will always work itself out in the end. I myself as you may already know grew up on a dead end street in Charleston SC we called it "The Bottom" and even though it was a notoriously bad neighborhood we lived and had fun everyday, if stuff happened it was just another part of our day,we didn't worry about politics or the effects of the decisions that Politicians made in fact we were oblivious to it. Remember Reagonomics! THe wealthy people thought that he was the greatest thing since sunshine, but poor people hurted because of his idealogy ,his focus was like a horse with blinders on.I agree with the death penalty, what I don't agree with is how long a murderer get's to live off of my tax dollars before he/she is given what they unconciously gave to their victims on average it cost $65k/yr to house a prisoner ,thats why its on the stock exchange, sone rich Pimp is making money off of meholding extra prisoners in jail! Abortion,Abortion,Abortion. My Mother had to keep still for 5months just to make sure I had a chance to make it into this world 'God bless her' and that was her decision she felt that she could nurture and love me and wanted me to survive,My Catalyst the one who didnt keep me a secret from Daddy ,to this day she loves me unconditionally, but some women arent like my Catalyst, they don't want to be burdened with someone that they don,t care about ,they are uncapable of nurturing and molding a good citizen,so I say let them have their choice,Where do you think alot of theese crazy violent individuals are produced ,''They got no love so they give no love'' Gay marriage cant produce offspring, define marriage, oppisites are made for a reason I have nothing against homosexuals, just be who you are,to me its all about benefits ,if you love someone that much put them on your insurance and call it a day ,thats just my opinion! Prayer in school ''Hell Yeah'' theese kids need it bad real bad ,yeah they should have prayer in schools @ 5 times a day maybe 12 the last one sould come with an ass whippin! In god we trust on our money, huh? Give unto Caesar whatever ,dead white men on paper makes the worl go round ,what it has to do with God- You got me! Pledge of Allegiance ,maybe its just me ,but vibe with me.Would you make a statue and say that this statue is God,so we should all stand up and make sure that we say God to properly represent the statue ''Negro please'' commandmet check isle 20th of Exodus. War is necessary! Love you big bro and Obama Too!

You're right.I entirely agree with you. What you debate on is very important, for everywhere you in the whole world,Christians hold politicians higher than they hold even Christ our Savior.politicians are human beings, where Christ is the Lord of all of us as christians:
1-Absolutely
2-No
3-No
4-Yes
5-Absolutely Yes

No ,war is not a good thing. All of us must pray to God to avoid it!

I can't pray for a candidate that goes against God's laws.

Hey, Bro.

It is true that you could grow up in the same house and have a difference of opinions. I think a thorough study of the bible and the history of this country would do most a world of good. Thank you for sharing.

You need to go back to verse 16 where the word of Lord says, "You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed you (I have planted you), that you might go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and that your fruit may be lasting (that it may remain, abide), so that whenever you ask the Father in My Name (as presenting all that I AM), He may give it to you.

So what is the Lord saying that he has planted us in the world for we are SALT and once we were saved and received the precious gift of eternal life that we go out into highways, and byways and declare the good news of Jesus Christ so what does that entail, that we get involved in the world in every aspect of it, in the work place, politics, etc. and the Lord will guide us on when and what to. say and the timing of it so that it's most effective. In the process of all this as you share and declare who you are in Christ people will dislike, people will hateyou, people will want to get you fired, but IF YOU TRULY TRUST in the Lord He will get you thru because the Word says "That no weapon formed against shall prosper and that is where verse 19 comes in because we are not of this world we're going stick out like a sore thumb (we are peculiar people). These are exciting times because the Lord draweth nigh. We can't hide in the closest that's the reason we're seeing what we're seeing. Have a blessed day.
